Exercise Reduces Jet Lag

Filed under: Sports — admin @ 2:00 pm

Let lag is a physiological phenomena resulting from crossing one or more time zones. Jet lag originates in nerve cells of the hypothalamic region of our brain which regulate temperature, sleep, and timing such as circadian rhythms. This internal brain system does not react rapidly to changes such as skipping ahead several time zones. When timing is disrupted we experience the symptoms of jet lag. These are:

*Fatigue

*Insomnia

*Loss of appetite

*Disorientation

*Reduced concentration

*Reduced aerobic fitness performance

*Reduced anaerobic fitness performance

*Higher injury rates

*Reduced dynamic strength

*Stomach problems

*Joint swelling and stiffness

*Muscles pain and stiffness

If you take no special precautions, jet lag can be very unpleasant and last quite awhile. For every time zone you cross, it is estimated to require a full day to recover from jet lag.

New research has shown that exercise before, during the flight and after arrival can reduce jet lag symptoms and jet lag time. First, take good care of your self. Eat well, exercise, get plenty of sleep and stay well hydrated. There’s no magic preflight jet lag exercise program. You can do cardio, interval training or weight training. Just do something with some intensity.

During the flight it is important for you to get up often and move around, doing simple stretches and exercises. Even easy movements like walking up and down the aisle, a few squats or some stretches will improve many jet lag symptoms. Exercise, too, is a regulator of the hypothalamic pituitary axis and it does so in a way that counteracts the functions of jet lag. Here are a few exercises you can do on flight:

*BENT KNEE RAISES. Stand by the aisle and put your hand on a seat. Raise your knee up to your hip level several times on both sides.

*SQUATS. Keep the same position and do a few sit down-stand up squats.

*SHOULDER SHRUGS: With arms at side (seated or standing) roll shoulders in a circular movement, both front and back.

*NECK STRETCH: Perform easy, gentle neck circles to the right and then to the left. (Sitting or standing)

*ARM REACHES: Reach both arms straight above your head and hold. (Sitting or standing)

*WALKING: Walk up and down the aisles a few minutes. You can vary your walk from a normal heel to toe walk, to walking on your toes or walking on your heels.

*UPPER BACK AND CHEST STRETCHES: First squeeze your shoulder blades together and hold for a few seconds. This stretches the chest. Next give yourself a big bear hug and round your shoulders forward for an upper back stretch.

* RAISE YOUR HEART RATE. Most of us may be too timid to jog in place in the aisles or jump. If you just want privacy to rev yourself up go to the lavatory and jog/jump. There’s not much room but it works!

The above are only a few simple movements you could use during a flight. The effects of exercise on diminishing and shortening the jet lag symptoms are also useful post flight. Most individuals who cross several time zones feel tired, a little sick and disoriented post flight. Another moderate or higher intensity workout will help your brain shake off those post flight blues.

Exercise isn’t the only way to relieve jet lag. Performing exercise together with the following simple measures would be more effective:

* Get a full nights sleep several days before you depart

*Stay well hydrated several days before and during the flight

*Avoing significant amounts of alcohol or caffeine

*During the flight, carry on light healthy snacks and eat one every 3 hours.

*If you feel very tired, try to take naps of 30 minutes or less

*Use earplugs off and on on the plane to give yourself a break from the constant noise and also use them if you take a nap.

*Use light and dark to trigger wake cycles. If you are trvaeling across many time zones then you may want to use a light therapy device.

The Greats of Classic Television: Introduce Them to Your Family Tonight

Filed under: Sports — admin @ 9:47 am

“They don’t make ‘em like they used to.” You hear this said about everything – cars, houses, toys, clothes… Well, they don’t make TV shows like they used to, either. If you grew up watching classic TV, you probably have some very fond memories of sitting in front of the television with your family watching some of the classics at night. There are very few modern television shows that the whole family can sit down and watch together. Either they are geared towards kids and the grown ups aren’t interested or they are geared for adults and are inappropriate for the kids.

There is good news for families who would like to share some time in front of the television together, though. Many of the classic TV shows are being released on DVD, usually a season at a time. Families can now enjoy TV classics from the 50’s, 60’s 70’s, and 80’s on DVD’s that include lots of extras like interviews with the cast members and outtakes.

One of the biggest perks of watching the shows on DVD – no annoying commercials. Today, we’re used to watching television on our terms. We fast forward through commercials on shows we’ve recorded on DVRs. When these classic shows first aired, there was no fast forwarding. Viewers had to sit through the commercials or flip the channel (sometimes manually!) often only to find more commercials.

Think about it. You can now introduce your kids to TV classics such as Happy Days, season by season and show them the first time a television show literally “jumped the shark.” Retro is cool right now, and it doesn’t get much more retro than Happy Days. It was retro from the day it debuted.

What’s available on classic TV DVD? Just about anything you’re interested in.

Variety Shows. Remember a few years back when Nick and Jessica attempted a Christmas special variety show? If your kids were interested in that, then they would probably be interested in The Sonny and Cher Show or The Donny and Marie Show. Sure these 70’s shows were high on the cheese factor, but the performers had some real talent.

Another great variety show from the 70’s that the family will love is The Carol Burnett Show. You’d be amazed at how much today’s kids appreciate good, clean, funny comedy when they are actually exposed to it.

Some of the best episodes of variety shows were the Christmas specials. Sonny and Cher and Donny and Marie had their share of Christmas specials, but the master of the Christmas special was Bob Hope. Many of his classic Christmas variety shows are available on DVD.

Classic Sitcoms. I Love Lucy. The Honeymooners. The Dick Van Dyke Show. Leave it to Beaver. The Brady Bunch. The Beverly Hill Billies. The Cosby Show. Family Ties. The Jeffersons. Happy Days. Mash. The Monkees. Did you sit around watching these shows (or reruns of these shows) with your family when you were a kid? Chances are you did. All of these classic television sitcoms are available on DVD. Wouldn’t it be great to sit back with your kids and a great big bowl of popcorn and watch The Cosby Show’s Claire Huxtable tell her husband Cliff to please go upstairs and kill the children? Now that’s classic tv.

Mind Power Over Involuntary Body Functions

Filed under: Sports — admin @ 6:54 am

Much has been written about the mind-body connection. Studies have shown that people can learn to control involuntary body functions consciously, using the power of their minds. But so much of the research has been challenged on the one side, and exaggerated on the other, that many of us are justifiably skeptical of claims for this kind of “mind power.”

Just how much can we control our bodies using the power of our minds? Let’s find out. There are simple and safe ways to experiment in this area.

Mind Power Over Autonomic Body Functions

When I was a child, my mother was studying yoga, and she taught me and my brothers how to relax and enter a meditative state. While in this state, we also found that we could “order” the blood to flow to one arm or the other, causing a noticeable increase in the warmth of that arm. These little experiments were the first time that I realized how much control our minds really can have.

We normally assume that things like where our blood flows and how our hearts beat are outside of our conscious control. This is certainly true, in part. A person can’t necessarily choose right now to change their heart rate or blood flow, or brain wave frequency. However, with the right techniques and some practice, all of these involuntary body functions can be consciously controlled.

For example, your pupils get bigger automatically when it is dark. Interestingly, they also get larger when you see something you like, or just vividly imagine something you like. Once you understand this, you can quickly learn to control your pupil size with just your mind. Go watch your eyes in a mirror right now, and see what happens when you imagine someone you like, a favorite food, or anything you would like to see.

If the desire is strong and the imagined scene vivid, your pupils quickly grow in size. Try different scenes to see which work best. After an hour of practice, you should be able to consciously change your pupil size at will. Larger pupils, by the way, are a sign of receptivity that is picked up unconsciously by the person in front of you. The sense that you like that person will often make him or her feel similarly towards you. There are other uses for this trick that are beyond the scope of this article.

Using Feedback To Develop Control

Biofeedback machines, which monitor perspiration, heart rate, and breathing, can be used to learn how to control many normally involuntary body functions. Without one of these expensive machines, we have to find other ways to get feedback. Notice that in the pupil experiment above you have instant feedback by way of the mirror.

To measure heart rate, you can simply take your pulse, or have someone else do it. To speed up imagine stepping on a nail that goes through your foot. The more you develop your ability to imagine things vividly, the better this will work. Take your pulse immediately before and then during this exercise in imagination. Some use this trick to beat polygraph machines (lie detector tests), by consciously increasing both heart rate and perspiration during the “control” questions.

Meditators can eventually learn how to slow their heart and relax at will. Practice is needed, the feedback you get is what keeps you on the right path. You may not know exactly what you are doing to slow down your heart or relax your muscles, or increase your body temperature. That’s okay. It is like learning to ride a bicycle. You learn how by trying and practicing, but in the end you’re still not able to explain to someone how you use your muscles to balance. In a similar way you can learn to control many body functions it if you have proper feedback.

Need physical energy? You could use caffeine or other drugs, but this is area is also susceptible to mind power. Ever notice how talking about something you are passionate about “wakes” you up? There are real chemical changes that happen. With a vivid enough imagination, you can get some of the same effect by imagining such a conversation. In a more extreme example, you can create a flow of adrenaline - normally an involuntary body function - by imagining a fight with a bear, or whatever gets you going.

Clearly there are many ways to control the autonomic nervous system, or “involuntary body functions” using mind power.

The ‘Down And Dirty’ On Creating Offers That Will Have Customers Whipping Out Their Credit Cards!

Filed under: Sports — admin @ 3:43 am

There are two types of retailers that I have come across: The Generous Retailer and The Stingy Retailer.

The first retailer gives you the feeling that you had the best offer in months or years, an offer you felt had ridiculous value!

The Stingy Retailer gives you the feeling after the sale that you have overpaid.

Which retailer do you want to be? I know which one I want to be!

How do you create absolutely irresistable offers on the web?

Give them something FREE! Give them bonuses by the truckload! Then put a timescale on your offer! Make it a limited offer! And then be true to your word..

The word ‘free’ is always exciting. By giving away so many free items, you make sure the customer will think he is totally insane not to click that Buy button!

And the feeling of scarcity always creates urgency and fear. Give the customer a reason not to wait, put a deadline to your offer, or he might never return!

1. Research the company. This should be first and foremost with any home based Internet business. Check with the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) and see if there are any complaints against the company. Keep in mind that if you do see any complaints against the company that this does not necessarily mean that this is a bad company. Also ask for references from the company.

Not everyone will be happy with the results of any company. This could be a result of that individual not doing their part to make their business a success. If you see a complaint, what you should look for are “resolved” complaints. If complaints have been resolved and if there are not a lot of complaints, this is a good sign that the company cares about its customers and believes in good customer service.

Casinos. Lotteries and drawings, as a way to attract customers to a casino. Part 1.

Filed under: Sports — admin @ 9:47 pm

So is our human nature, everything goes to reserve, if there is no more interesting or advantageous method of money investment there. A consumer has a question what to spend money on, if there is such a variety of everything at the market. If we consider economy and theory of marginal utility, under Engel’s law, with growth of family profits the proportion of money spend on clothes, dwelling and public utilities changes a little, and the proportion of money spend on satisfaction of cultural needs increases significantly.

Then there is an entertainment industry. Gaming business, foremost, is for people, having free money. Its basic task is getting these hidden and well-kept treasures from people. Business does not do without a competition growing annually not only with establishments, offerings other types of leisure, but between colleagues on business. There are always a lot of people interested in getting money, especially those prepared for a pleasant pastime. Money is in front of you, but how to get it? What should you do, to make people bring it exactly to your establishment? Gaming-houses do a lot to attract customers.

Foremost a variety of free food and services is offered in a casino, only to keep a player for some time in a gaming-house. It increases the chance a person wants to play more. There are parties, free bars, tea, coffee and cigarettes among them, everything a person may need to spend a few days in a gaming-house without leaving it. But it also may be not enough, to keep people. New offers that may interest an already choosy visitor are introduced. Some establishments even return 10 percent of a loss. A return is usually done the next day, hoping that a potential customer will decide to win back, what he has lost. And as a result, a customer spends more and more money.

Many casinos try to attract players introducing new games. But it cuts both ways. With some time interest to the innovation can disappear, and new games rarely become popular.

It is possible to choose a different way. That is to spend money on buying new slots with progressive jackpots. But in most cases people come to a casino not to play with machines, but with people.

Drawings are different. The pressure of competition becomes especially noticeable, when it comes to them. In some casinos, drawings are held periodically. You can judge to a certain degree about welfare of a casino by the number of drawings held. But even they are also concerned with drawings. There is enough money, but not ideas. Casinos often hire cabaret-groups having a few drawings. But it is not an ideal solution. There are a few reasons for that. Drawings are usually held by the same person who is easily recognized not only by his appearance but also by his phrases, which customers, possibly, have already heard in other establishments. Though competitions differ from those seen before, they are performed in the same way characteristic of this artistic group. They are not original, and sometimes are rather banal.

Usually drawings begin with a primitive pulling of tickets out of lottery drum, thus, determining the participants. The rest is up to anchormen’s fantasy if it is narrow or it is about considerable winning, “Wheel of Fortune” or simply roulette helps. The main task of organizers is providing a variety of that part of lottery which comes after lottery drum, if it can not be avoided. Also the characteristic feature of drawings is holding a few rounds, with one or two hours break between them, and the last round usually starts after midnight. This is a psychological way to keep the customers, who, probably, will spend time of waiting for a decision round playing.

6 Ways Microsoft Windows Vista Will Increase Business Efficacy

Filed under: Sports — admin @ 4:40 pm

Today businesses function with technology which boosts their efficacy. Technology is integral to smooth functioning of factories as well as offices. Communications and instant access to information has enabled a computerized business world to leap ahead in efficacy and globalization.

Computers in business increase efficacy and Microsoft has been promoting Vista as a must have for businesses. However, Mark Casazza, director of academic information for the City University in New York feels otherwise, “…From what I have heard Vista is not going to provide any functionality to business users….”

Vista has supporters as well as critics but as far as businesses are concerned Vista is, according to Microsoft promos and bazaar talk offering:

1. High level security. Most companies spend thousands of dollars in securing their business data as with the advent of the World Wide Web cyber thievery is at an all time high. Vista is designed to provide multiple layers of protection. It will protect the business from external attacks and there are ways in which crucial information and data can be protected by creating a fortress of authorized access. If external threats to business plans and data are protected from competitors then the business is all set to thrive.

2. The way information is used will change dramatically as Vista has inbuilt modules that increase many fold the use of knowledge and resources. The system is user friendly, quick, and secure. So, web site data and availability as well as the corporate servers are function in tandem and efficiently.

3. Vista lends power to a workforce that is mobile. Workers in the field can get ready and instant access to company data and corporate systems using hand held devices. In fact with Vista computer files can be accessed remotely even if the computer has been shut down. Wireless connections, networking between colleagues and synchronization of mobile resources all contribute towards the streamlining of business processes.

4. Vista has been designed such that business operating systems become easier to deploy, manage, and support. The imaging technology enables creation of an operating system image for deployment to computers throughout the world. This means great increases in efficacy and reduction in IT costs. Vista has an early version of the Application Compatibility Toolkit that can be used to test compatibility of existing systems with Vista.

5. Management automation is integral to Vista and this grants greater degree of control across an organization and lends consistency. The Event Viewer assists IT department to view, prioritize, and respond to change. It also makes sure that removable storage devices are not accessible to unauthorized personnel.

6. The latest diagnostic, self-help, and remote assistance systems in Vista work towards a great reduction in maintenance costs especially manual labor. Vista is empowered to detect and correct automatically hardware problems, networking glitches, power transition, resource exhaustion, booting, crashes, and other system failures.

In the global business environment of today Vista will offer an “edge” to business enterprises. It drives efficacy, networking, collaboration, and communication. Whether or not these projections will be a functional reality will be known when Vista is released in its final form to businesses.

What Does Creativity Bring to Your Life?

Filed under: Sports — admin @ 12:08 pm

In my 2004 e-book, The Creativity Interviews (details below), I asked 7 questions about the creative process to 19 creative artists from a variety of disciplines.

One of these questions was “what does creativity bring to your life?”

As I’m looking through the answers with new eyes, themes start to pop up in front of me. As you read through these broad themes, and the actual phrases spoken by the artists in the book, consider which ones you identify with most.

Creativity brings adventure, affects my whole life and what’s “out there”

Artist spoke of a sense of “exploration”, “spontaneity” and “adventure”, and that their creativity “brings life to whatever I’m doing”. They felt the effects of their creativity on other parts of their life, giving them “unique problem solving opportunities” and “energizing my relationships”.

Creativity brings opportunities for self-discovery of what’s “in here”

Artists appreciated the “heightened awareness” and increased ability to “understand myself”.

Creativity brings connections to people, both in and out of my “tribe”

“I feel I m part of a tribe of free people” was how one artist expressed this sense of connection and of being understood when they’re around other artists. Another artist recognized their creativity as a “gift I can share with others” fulfilling the desire for connection in a way that’s natural and enjoyable for the artist.

These are hopeful points, considering how isolated and misunderstood many artists feel.

Creativity brings a spiritual connection

Themes of spirituality such as “gratitude”, “purity” and “essence” could be heard in some of the answers from artists. One claimed creativity gives them “a glimpse of the spiritual realm”, and another described creativity as “a soulful experience”.

There was also the idea that creativity brings “a connection to something larger than myself”, and “the feeling that I’m ‘in the zone’, in the flow of life”. Many of us connect to our spirituality most easily through being in nature. One artist found that creativity brings a “freedom to recreate what I see in nature”.

I think one artist summed up the link between creativity and spirituality by answering with one word: “wonder”.

Creativity brings an awakening, a jarring, a sense of delicious discomfort

Though I only heard one answer that fit into this theme one artist felt that creativity brought a “discontinuity” to their life I included it because it really interested me.

What about those moments of torment before the dissonant chord resolves itself, before the elements and colours of a painting “come together”, before the ideas for a story or article make any sense.

And what about the plain fact that there is ALWAYS something we won’t know how to do, always something more to learn, always a creative idea who’s execution is out of our reach because our skills haven’t caught up to it yet. Is that partly what keeps us going?

What to look for: Domestic Violence

Filed under: Sports — admin @ 11:05 am

Domestic violence is more than just a situation of a man hitting his wife on a Saturday night after they have both had a few drinks, although this situation can be part of a bigger problem. Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior that evolves over time with an end result of one partner using a range of tactics to have ultimate and complete control over the other partner. These tactics can include verbal abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse and/or psychological abuse. Depending on the levels of control the abuser has over his own behavior, domestic violence can at best result in a woman or child living in fear of an attack on a daily basis, to a situation where a woman or child dies at the hands of their abuser. In New Zealand alone six women died at the hands of their partner between November 2005 and January 2006 and these figures are comparable per head of population in most western countries.

The important point to note in this definition is the fact that domestic abuse is a pattern of behavior that evolves over time. A partner could act jealous for example if he catches “his lady” talking to another man. If, in response to his verbal anger his partner spends time reassuring him and taking the blame for her “wrong” behavior, the male starts to learn that the initial anger he expressed was “acceptable” within the relationship and so the next time he gets upset he gets that much worse, and so on.

Because the control by the male partner creeps up and becomes more pervasive over time, many women don’t realize their partner is abusive until it is too late. Some of these “warning signs” that you as a woman should note is when you are dating someone new for example and the man might want to really fast track the relationship so that he is living with you before you really know too much about him; he might always need to be right in a discussion even if he isn’t; he doesn’t give you any space in the relationship and always needs to know where you are, who you are with and what you are doing; other signs include the use of pornography; lack of consideration of your needs; has issues with gay people, different ethnicities and races, and other women who may be more confident than he feels comfortable with; and so on.

One of the reasons why it is fairly easy to be lulled into a false sense of security when in a relationship with an abuser is that in the early stages of the relationship the length of time between incidences might be fairly long. He may get angry only once every two or three months for example, but if the woman stays in that relationship, and the degree of abuse, whether it be physical, emotional, psychological or sexual (it is usually a combination of these elements) gets steadily worse, then regardless of what the man might say in the “honeymoon period” he is not going to stop abusing her. In fact there is a very real danger that the number of incidences in a year will increase alongside the increased severity of the attack.
